My gap yaah begins

19.08.19

At six this morning local time I arrived at Kathmandu airport with my heavily crammed backpack of stickers, kazoos, balloons and a years supply of diarrhoea relief (note my singular rucksack is actually smaller than Francesca’s when she did Project and definitely smaller than Sam’s multiple cases of books even though they were only abroad for 8 months). If you are reading this you are probably aware that in order to find myself and fully embrace my spiritual vegan, I am spending my gap teaching in rural Nepal for 12 months through the organisation Project Trust. In fitting with my newly wholesome existence I have also evidently decided to attempt a blog (although I doubt I’ll tell you about it for a few weeks until I can decided whether it’s feasible).

After an emotional sendoff at 10am on Sunday morning as Sam dropped me a fist bump whilst Jude cried, I returned home at 10:02 for my debit card and driving license. On failing to locate these we left again at 10:07 only to realise half an hour later they were in my bag. At 2, I flew from Heathrow to Dubai and then onto Kathmandu. Clocking a grand total of 3 hours sleep next to a girl guide on the second plane, we spent our first hour in Nepal lying on our bags at the airport.

For the next week Selin and I are staying in Kathmandu with the other 16 volunteers in Nepal giving us a chance to explore the city as a large group before we all travel out to our individual projects this weekend. We are enjoying luxuries of showers, toilet paper, beds with mattresses, electricity and WiFi. Observations about the city so far: it’s telephone lines are incredibly tangled. Shanta, Project’s representative from Kathmandu, is our guide and has already treated us to our first dal bhat – questions were raised over the goat meat… That’s pretty much all that’s happened so far.
